The Monthly A.M. Babu Lecture, organized by the Afro-Asia Institute for Strategic Studies, featured a lecture by Dr. Wandia Njoya on the theme of “Decolonizing African Education.” In her lecture, Dr. Njoya explored the historical and structural issues within African educational systems, shaped by colonial legacies. She argued that African education systems often replicate colonial values and frameworks, which marginalize indigenous knowledge systems and undermine African identity.
Dr. Njoya emphasized the need for an educational reform that centers African cultures, languages, and epistemologies. She proposed the development of a curriculum that encourages critical thinking, fosters creativity, and aligns with the needs and realities of African societies. The lecture underscored the importance of reclaiming African educational institutions from foreign paradigms and reimagining them to serve the continent’s future generations.
